The Story Behind the Name: Glimmer Counseling

When I first began envisioning what my practice would look like, I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I wanted the name to represent. I knew I wanted to create a space where people could come to feel seen, heard, and empowered, no matter their background, identity, or life experiences. But it wasn’t just about offering therapy—it was about offering hope. Hope that even in the midst of pain, growth, and healing, there is always a glimmer of light.

The word "glimmer" kept appearing in my mind. It wasn’t a word that felt heavy or overwhelming, but it was filled with meaning. A glimmer is small—often fleeting—but it holds the potential for something bigger. It’s that first spark of possibility, that flicker of hope in dark times. A glimmer is often just the beginning, but it carries within it the promise of more: more growth, more clarity, more understanding.

I also loved how the word “glimmer” felt inclusive. It’s not a blinding light that demands attention; it’s subtle, gentle, and it shows up in many forms. Sometimes a glimmer is a quiet sense of relief after a tough day, or a new insight that shifts your perspective. Sometimes it’s the first step toward feeling whole again after trauma. But no matter what it looks like, a glimmer reminds us that even the smallest sign of progress is worth celebrating.

Naming my practice Glimmer Counseling was a conscious decision to prioritize that small but powerful sense of possibility—especially for people who may have felt overlooked or misunderstood. My goal is to provide a space where those glimmers of hope can grow into something lasting. Whether you are navigating mental health challenges, racial and gender identity struggles, neurodivergence, or simply the complexities of life, I want to be here for you—to help you discover your glimmer and let it lead you toward healing.

The name is a reflection of my mission: to honor the uniqueness of each person who walks through the door and to help them find and nurture that spark within themselves. Glimmer is for anyone who has felt like their voice, their identity, or their experiences have been ignored or minimized. It’s for those who feel the weight of multiple identities, systems of oppression, or past trauma and are looking for a way to move forward—slowly, steadily, but with purpose.

And so, Glimmer Counseling was born, not just as a name, but as a reminder: you don’t have to have it all figured out right away. Sometimes, healing begins with a glimmer, and from there, we can build something brighter together.

At Glimmer Counseling, we understand that each individual’s mental health journey is unique, shaped by a complex web of identities, experiences, and social contexts. This is why we believe intersectional services are not just important—they are necessary.

Intersectionality acknowledges that people’s identities do not exist in isolation. Our race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, neurodivergence, ability, and other facets of identity interact with one another, shaping how we experience the world and how the world responds to us. When we fail to consider the intersections of these identities, we risk overlooking the specific challenges and needs that individuals face.

For example, a Black trans woman’s experience with mental health struggles, or a neurodivergent person of color navigating systemic discrimination, is vastly different from that of someone who does not face those intersecting identities. Without an intersectional approach, therapy can miss the nuances of these experiences and fail to provide truly effective care.

By offering intersectional services, we create a space where individuals from all walks of life can be seen, heard, and understood in their full complexity. This approach helps us address not just the symptoms, but the root causes of distress, which are often tied to systemic oppression, marginalization, and unacknowledged trauma. Our goal is to empower clients to heal on their own terms, while recognizing the unique challenges they face in navigating multiple, often conflicting, social systems.

In an ever-diverse world, intersectional services are not only a matter of equity—they are a matter of true healing. At Glimmer Counseling, we are committed to providing therapy that is as unique and multifaceted as the people we serve. Everyone deserves to be supported in a way that affirms their identity and fosters growth, and intersectional care makes that possible.
